New in Bandung

A good friend of mine moved to Indonesia a couple years ago to pursue a career in teaching English as a second/foreign language. We kept up our communication via email, and he would always tell me how good his life was here. He unknowingly sowed the seed of interest.

I completed my CELTA in December 2009, and my friend introduced me to Jamilah (via email) while I was doing my course. Once I finished my CELTA, I was ready to come to Indonesia to begin teaching and gain some experience.

Wow, here I am, 2 months working at TBI Jawa and living in Bandung, Indonesia. So far it has been really good. I did not have any nerves coming here as my friend made it sound really good. Being fresh from the CELTA, I did not have any nerves on my first day either. Since this was is my first teaching job, that helped as well.

Teaching at Jalan Jawa (JJ) is so much fun. The staff at the school have really helped me to settle in quickly, smoothly and comfortably. The student advisors are ‘top notch’, if you need it they will try and get it and the teaching staff are always on hand to help with ideas or lighten the load. The atmosphere with the teachers is great: they get on like a group of school mates (it’s true). There has not been a time when someone is not laughing.

The students… What can I say about the students?!? I feel that I have been given some of the nicest student classes to work with, I mean teach. The students have been so welcome and responsive it is almost overwhelming. I had the thought that some students would be rude, carefree, and irresponsible. This is not the case, even though there are some that come to class late.

Bandung has really been a nice place to come to. It is not too big, but has good things to offer.
